MDX Files in Linux
« on: March 14, 2011, 06:43:42 PM »
So MDX is a disk image format created by Daemontools. Its fairly uncommon but i came across it today and refused to restart my computer because im hard headed like that. So instead i booted up a virtual machine of windows 7 that i have lying around.

Once Guest Additions have been installed its a breeze to transfer files between your hard disk and the virtual machine. So i transfered the MDX and found myself unable to extract it because my virtual disk image was out of space.... So hell i extracted straight out of the virtual machine.  Fun stuff.

Took a little while and frustration to figure it out. But yea there does not seem to be any other method of access the file type without daemon tools.

That's because there is no native support for mdx files as of now. The idea has been added to Ubuntu's brainstorm but I doubt this will take shape any time soon as it hasn't been requested very often in the forums of other distros.

Edit: It was also created by Blizzard for use in Warcraft 3 (who knew?)

Lol wrong MDX. There are a few of them floating around.. meh. And it wont get implemented. It would be too much work for such a minor image format.

Why don't you try? How hard could an image format possibly be to decode?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdemu/  looks like it might support mdx for linux.

Maybe daemon-tools would run under wine? Just found out a week ago that Angry Birds runs under wine :D

Seems right to me? I agree with the no implementation part. Only 9 votes on brainstorm and if Ubuntu won't try then the other distros won't....Unless Linus suddenly gets the urge to start supporting it with mount 8)

It won't work on wine. Guess you're stuck using Windows :o

Yeah, wikipedia links to the source code of it for a specification of MDX, and from what I understand, they are pretty much the same thing.

Hmm Interesting. Perhaps ill try cdemu. Although its a simpler solution to just go into windows and convert images in that format to ISO's or something.

MDX is actually more powerful than ISO, because it also contains the cue sheet. So you could store your (for example) audio disc in a single MDX file as opposed to a data file and a cue file. You can think of it as a dual-mode image.
