f*cked up an ip change and now have only one nameserver [resolved]
« on: September 14, 2011, 10:43:55 AM »
I seem to be in an odd position where I have only 1 nameserver and I cannot remove it.

what happened was as follows:

a few days ago my host changed my server ips and I need to do the set up myself. I attempted to follow the tutorial given to me by my host but it didn't seem to work (I found out why later), so with 3 ip addresses appearing in my panel I thought I had to move everything from the old ip to the new ip so thats what I did, I thought I needed to wait for it to propagate so I left it.  and today I logged on and nothing had happened, so I went to try the ip change again and realised that I hadn't actually done the ip swap (the command has a # infront of it, presumably to stop noobs from changing their ip from 1.2.3.4 to 5.6.7.8). and now the old ip and everything I had put onto the new ip seems to have vanished, (AFAIK all of the files are OK) and I have one nameserver and my panel (directadmin) won't let me delete it so I can try to get it working again.

what I am asking is, is there a way to fix this or do I need to reinstall everything?

edit: its a VPS running CentOS

I'm not going to be very active for a while, I have a huge amount of school work to do and I have many other commitments.
I am also revamping my website and it should be done sometime in the not too far future

I have just fixed the problem, there was a single button in my control panel (directadmin) labelled Clear NS which did it. I am incredibly embarrassed that I didn't see it.

Dont sweat it, I myself have missed things like this when using a control panel (especially DA), hence why I prefer using the terminal to administer servers!

My biggest panel fail is forgetting to hit "Apply Zone Configuration" in Webmin when playing with DNS settings.
